Anglo American

MAUREEN PHAMBANE

Q

A

Why did you want to work for Anglo American?

Anglo American is a diverse international mining company that is both credible and reputable.

What attracted you as a graduate?

I have always been a firm believer that the first job you get post-graduation sets the tone for the rest of your career. I saw that the BLAST grad programme gives its graduates the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge by giving them challenging roles in its South Africa operations and abroad. I felt that this programme would give me the platform to drive my career to where I wanted to be 5 years into the Mining industry.

What programmes did you take part in?

The Achiever Programme (TAP). This is a junior leadership programme provided by a leading business school in Johannesburg.

What advice would you give to graduates who want to embark on a career at Anglo American?

If you are looking for a company that has a sustainable approach in the way it does business and is focused on people development Anglo American is for you.

What differentiates the BLAST programme to other graduate development programmes in the market?

The roles that we do within the programme expose us to different commodities and we gain international working experience as well.

Which opportunity has benefited you the most, from a career perspective as an Anglo BLASTer?

Working in Group Technology Development as a Project Mining Engineer to design new mining technology that will drastically change the industry.

What challenges have you had to overcome in your role as an Anglo BLASTer and how did you overcome them?

Networking skills were the biggest challenge for me when I started in the programme 4 years ago. I was always intimidated to engage with new people because of my shy nature but through attending programmes likes TAP, Business Coaching and working in production as a supervisor I was able to be comfortable with my skills set and what I bring to the organisation.

Have your personal and professional goals been met on this programme? And if so, how?

I always wanted to have experience in Project Management and the BLAST programme gave me that opportunity within the 5 years of being in the company.
