Anglo American

A Career in Mining

The mining industry in South Africa has been the main driving force behind the history and development of Africa's most advanced and richest economy. South Africa has a long history when it comes to mining, an industry that forms the backbone of the country’s economy.

In 2016 the mining industry contributed approximately R225 billion towards South African Gross Domestic Product (GDP) representing 7.3% of overall GDP. Although the country is less dependent on mining, the mining industry nevertheless continues to make a valuable contribution to the South African economy, most notably in terms of foreign exchange earnings, employment and economic activity.

In spite of the global economic downturn, one can be assured that the mining industry will remain relevant, as the commodities produced are essential to modern-day living.

With Anglo American being one of the world’s largest mining companies, you can find our operations on five continents where we mine iron ore and manganese, metallurgical coal and thermal coal, base metals and minerals (copper), nickel, precious metals and minerals. We’re a global leader in both platinum and diamonds. Our strategy aims to develop core business processes which will ensure we become an industry leader in exploration, operations, project delivery and marketing to extract the full value from our assets.

As Anglo American, we aim to help build a stronger, healthier, and more sustainable South Africa, ever since our foundations were first laid in Johannesburg one hundred years ago by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer. Together with our employees, stakeholders and government, we find ourselves in a position to make a real difference and to create shared value for those that come in contact with our business.

Our foremost value at Anglo American is safety. We are committed to ensuring the safety of all employees and communities within the Anglo American family.
